How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Mechanic Pouring Motor Oil into Funnel

Motor oil should be changed at least once every 7,500 to 10,000 miles—but more importantly, you should always follow the recommended oil change frequency that your manufacturer provides. So, how often should you change your oil? Just check your owner’s manual or give us a call at (402) 464-6500. We know exactly what’s required to keep your Buick in excellent shape for years to come.

Oil Change Frequency Information

Oil changes are one of the most important services that you’ll need to secure for your vehicle, and we’re sure that Omaha and Beatrice drivers will want to make the most of every visit to our service center. Here are a few tips that you should keep in mind:

  • You should only use the grade of motor oil that your owner’s manual recommends. Within each grade, there are different types of motor oil that can provide additional protection for higher-mileage vehicles.
  • You might be tempted to use synthetic oil even if your vehicle doesn’t require it. As long as the oil product is the same grade as your vehicle’s recommended oil, doing so can reduce the amount of time that you’ll need to spend in the shop.
  • Your oil filter should be changed every time you replace your vehicle’s oil.

Not sure if you’re due for a change? Don’t wait for the signs of expired oil to start appearing. Play it safe and schedule service as soon as possible!

When to Alter Your Oil Change Frequency

There are several situations in which you might want to deviate from the recommended oil change frequency that you find in your owner’s manual. It’s not a bad idea to get an oil change before and/or after a long-distance road trip, for example.

If you frequently engage in any of the following activities near Hickman, scheduling more frequent oil changes could help to protect and extend the lifespan of your engine:

  • Off-roading
  • Commercial use
  • Racing
  • Heavy towing

How Often Should You Check Your Oil Level?

Even if you’re always scheduling oil changes on time, it’s important to check your oil level at least once per month. Many new vehicles have electronic oil monitors that you can use while you’re sitting behind the wheel. Other vehicles, and older models in particular, will require you to use the dipstick under the hood. Either way, checking the oil level is a simple, five-minute process that can help you catch leaks before they cause significant damage.
