Why Did My Buick’s Check Engine Light Come On?

There are several reasons why a Buick Enclave Check Engine light might come on. One of them is easy to fix, while the others might require our service center to help. The only true way to figure out why the light came on and how to reset a Check Engine light is to use a code scanner, called an OBD-II scanner.

Reasons your Buick Enclave Check Engine light in Beatrice might come to include, but are not limited to:

  • The gas cap is loose, broken, or missing
  • The vehicle needs new spark plugs or spark plug wires
  • The battery is low or not working, but this might also cause the Battery light to come on
  • Oxygen sensor needs to be replaced (you’ll also notice worsening gas mileage with this problem)
  • Issues with aftermarket items (which is why you should only trust OEM parts)
  • Vacuum leak
  • The mass airflow sensor needs to be replaced
  • The catalytic converter is broken
  • Issues with the transmission
  • And more

First things first. Make sure you repair it before you reset the check engine light. Second, check the gas cap and tighten it.

There are a couple of main ways to reset a check engine light in Hickman:

Use a Code Scanner

  • Purchase or borrow an OBD-II scanner. These specialized scanners cost anywhere from $20 to $60.
  • Plug the scanner into the port under the steering column using the cord that comes with the scanner.
  • Turn your key to the “ON” position, but do not start the vehicle.
  • When the dashboard lights illuminate, turn all vehicle accessories off.
  • Hit the “READ” button on the scanner to reveal the check engine light code.
  • Record the codes listed so you know what issues need to be fixed
  • Hit the “ERASE/CLEAR” button on the scanner.
  • Turn your key to the “OFF” position.
  • When you see a “NO CODES” message, you can shut off the vehicle.

Remember, the key is to fix the issues as soon as possible. Keep in mind, if you do this before bringing your vehicle to our service center, we’ll have no way of knowing what exactly needs to be fixed.

Disconnect the Battery

  1. Turn off your engine and let it cool.
  2. Put on some safety goggles and gloves.
  3. Open your hood and find the negative terminal on your battery. It has a black cap and a negative (–) symbol on it.
  4. Carefully loosen the nut on the negative terminal using an adjustable wrench or the precise size wrench
  5. Gently pull the negative connector away from the car battery.
  6. Keep it disconnected for 30 to 60 seconds.
  7. Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it with the wrench.

You may have to reset the clock on your Enclave, and some aspects of the infotainment system may need to be rebooted. Again, disconnecting the battery will not fix the issue that caused the light to come on in the first place.
